Cobus Coetzee and Maxie Kroeze won the Groenkloof Mixed Pairs Title for the second year in a row this morning (July 4th, 2024) when they beat Jonty Rhodes and Laurette Pretorius!
It was a very windy morning, but Jonty and Laurette held their course well and after six heads they led by 8 shots to 3.
Just before tee time, the winning team took the wind out of the leaders’ sails by collecting 4 shots to make the score 9 – 8 in their favour.
Cobus and Maxie played well together and after 12 of the 18 heads they were four shots ahead (13 – 9). Jonty and Laurette then recovered well and made it 12 – 14 with only 3 heads to play!
The 16th head was decisive, because when Jonty moved the whites away from the shot ball, they were one up! However, Cobus moved the white just a bit with a brilliant pull shot to get another shot that made it 15 – 12. It was a game winner because if Jonty had got 1 shot it would have been 13 – 14 with 2 heads to go.
The final score was 22 – 12, but that does not give the full picture. The reason is that the losing team held a shot on the 18th head. However, because they were behind 12 – 17 and therefore needed 5 shots to draw level, Jonty tried something to get shots with a weight shot. He put the white in the ditch, but 2 back balls and further pull shots from Cobus then produced 5 shots for the winning team!
